MIA: I got a new job

I'm a strong, independent woman ... who runs the internet... kinda.

I got a new job in the beginning of September. The company my husband works for was hiring and I applied for the job. Doing what exactly? The same thing I've been doing for the last 2 years - running inventory for a hosting company.

I went through a lengthy interview process and was extended a job offer the same day as my in-person interview. I got a perfect score on my interview, which was important to me because I wanted to know I got the job because I was amazing. And not because of nepotism. And after 7 weeks of working together, I can say that it hasn't been even slightly weird working with my husband. But that's just how we mesh.

"This Jen, is the Internet"

SO WAIT, how do you run the internet Stephanie?
Cloud and Managed hosting are what run the internet. Everything you are seeing right now - your email, this blog, your facebook, your phone apps, your dropbox files - are all hosted on a server computer, in a datacenter, run by a company. I've been lucky to work for three such companies in my life.

My personal job is to work in shipping, receiving and inventory management. This means I'm typically the first person to touch the servers as we receive them, and pass them along the line until they are installed and hosting our customers data. I get to crush hard drives, see the latest-and-greatest technology and nastolgia hard with some pretty old hardware. It's awesome!!

I got to visit our corporate office down in San Antonio a few weeks ago, and it was really crazy. The thing is built out of an entire mall and is more than a million square feet. I didn't get to take photos, but if you'd like to see what it's like - here's a video of Texas Governor candidate Wendy Davis visiting.

BONUS STORY: I once worked for a hosting company that shared a collocation pod with GoDaddy.com back when Blogger still partnered with their domain services. Meaning I possibly walked by a server your blog domain was hosted on. Crazy stuff!

I promise to have more updates soon. I've been sitting on so many ideas, posts and collection finds. I have some amazing stories to tell about some Walking Dead and Bronze age comics I've scored. Not to mention Halloween costumes and pumpkin carvings!!!! Stay tuned.

  1. I always wondered what exactly you did! Sounds interesting--are the servers rented by large companies who then resell space or does your company also do smaller-scale clients like someone just on self-hosted wordpress?

  2. That is so awesome! Congratulations again on the new gig -- your job sounds fascinating! Thanks for keeping the internet going. Because we all know it's not a big truck, it's a series of tubes, and thank you for keeping those tubes free of ... non-internet ... and bad internet... it's a series of tubes. Or boxes. In Texas.

i don't know what i'm talking about anymore

  3. Bluehost is definitely one of the best web-hosting provider for any hosting plans you might require.
